A measles outbreak strikes Pohnpei.

What happened

Measles was one of the foreign diseases that struck Pohnpei every few years after 1854; missionaries recorded outbreaks in 1861 and again in 1894. Islanders had no resistance to these new diseases, and Pohnpei’s population fell to about half its 1840 level by 1900.
