Madolenihmw’s Wasai, excluded from sharing the stranded sailors, clashes with the Nahnmwarki’s forces, falling “just short of all-out war.”
What happened
The Wasai of Madolenihmw, a rival of the Nahnmwarki, was angered at being left out when the roughly 120 sailors stranded by the Shenandoah raid were divided among the chiefs. Raids and clashes between their forces fell “just short of all-out war,” and missionaries described the following four months as “chaos and drunken revelry.”
Why it matters
The raid’s sailors and salvaged guns fed into Pohnpei’s chiefly rivalries in the decades before Spanish rule.
