What happened

Tetens, now sailing a steamship for the Hamburg firm Godeffroy, left an agency of one European and two Palauans to collect bêche-de-mer. By his own account, when Yapese attacked the Vesta at night they were frightened off by cannon, and chiefs later came aboard with gifts to make amends.
