Influenza strikes Pohnpei.

What happened

Influenza returned to Pohnpei in 1871, as it had in 1856 and would again in 1874 and 1879, according to missionary letters. Epidemics like these, together with smallpox in 1854, cut Pohnpei’s population to about 5,000 by century’s end.
