Salik II is deposed and Sru IV becomes Kosrae’s first elected king; population stands at 397.
What happened
Salik II, who had opposed Christianity, was deposed at a meeting in October, and Awane Sru IV, a church supporter, became Kosrae’s first elected king. The COM-FSM outline calls this the “final de facto collapse” of the traditional royal system; the population had fallen to 397 (237 males and 160 females).
Why it matters
Kosrae’s kingship and church became closely tied before any colonial power governed the island.
