Holcomb sets up a permanent trading station on Yap.
What happened
Holcomb’s private station competed with the German firms and with David O’Keefe; Hezel says Holcomb “enjoyed little success” and became one of O’Keefe’s bitterest enemies. The Hernsheim company’s schooner Coeran also arrived on Yap that October to look for bêche-de-mer.
