A typhoon sinks Bully Hayes’s Leonora and two whalers in Utwe Harbor.
What happened
The storm trapped Bully Hayes’s Leonora and two whalers in Utwe Harbor on the south coast, with little room to escape, and all three sank. Hayes and his crew stayed on Kosrae until October; after months of waiting he paid two deserters from an American whaler to take an open boat and look for help.
