German consul aboard SMS Habicht backs Hernsheim’s copra claim, ruling against Kosraeans.
What happened
A German consul general traveling on the warship SMS Habicht ruled that Kosraeans owed Hernsheim an indemnity of about 130,000 lb of copra for letting a rival company open a station, a decision the COM-FSM outline calls “unfavorable to the Kosraeans.” A week earlier, the captain of the British warship HMS Emerald had heard missionary Pease complain about the German firms’ unfair practices.
