Spain and Germany sign the Rome protocol embodying the papal settlement.
What happened
The protocol was signed by Spain’s ambassador to the Holy See, the Marqués de Molins, and the German envoy Schlözer. It set the limits of the Spanish Carolines at the Equator to 11°N and 133°E to 164°E, and gave Germany the right to a naval station and coal depot on one island.
Why it matters
These boundaries defined the Spanish Carolines, which later became most of the FSM and Palau.
