The first Yapese is baptized, a child named Leo.
What happened
The child was named Leo after Pope Leo XIII, who had given the Caroline mission to the Capuchins, and the Spanish governor stood as godfather before the whole colony and many Yapese. About 30 more Yapese, including several adults, were baptized soon after.
