Spanish rule begins, but Spain makes no attempt to govern Kosrae’s internal affairs.
What happened
After the papal settlement, Spain ruled the Eastern Carolines from Pohnpei, but it set up no post on Kosrae and made “no attempt to govern” its internal affairs. Trade stayed with German firms such as the Jaluit Company, which opened a station on Kosrae in 1887.
