A quake (MicSem 2072: “volcanic eruption”) at Lamer lasts about three months; an anti-missionary prophetic movement follows.

What happened

The upheaval at Lamer, the first such event in local memory, inspired a prophetic movement led by seven Lamer men who collected offerings for the spirit (kan) of the place and warned that the Spanish and Yapese Christians would be driven out or killed. The same men revived a fertility cult on Mt. Matsebap, which faded after several of the leaders’ wives and some of the women who attended died; Fr. Daniel’s challenge to the prophets made them retract.
