The Manila brings Capuchins and troops to Wene to dedicate the Kitti mission.

What happened

The Nahnmwarki of Kitti had asked for a mission in 1887, partly as a check on his rival Henry Nanpei, a Protestant church leader in Kitti; the uprising delayed the project. Governor Cadarso pushed it ahead as part of a road he planned to build around the island, and the Nahnmwarki, in European clothes, met the party; the residence stood only 60 yards from the Protestant church.

Why it matters

At the church’s blessing only a half dozen Pohnpeians attended while the Protestant service next door was crowded, a sign, MicSem says, that the Catholics had the chief’s goodwill but the Protestants had most of the people.
