What happened

The second assault came after word of the coming war between the United States and Spain reached Pohnpei. Afterward Awak was fortified with a large wall and held by Spanish troops for months; COM-FSM’s teaching pages describe the war as a split between Catholic northern districts and Protestant southern ones.

Why it matters

Net and Sokehs fighting beside Spain against other Pohnpeians shows how church rivalry had become a proxy for chiefdom rivalry.
