American whalers sell arms to Madolenihmw; the Catholic residence at Aleniang, Kitti, is burned.

What happened

After the 1898 fighting at Awak, Madolenihmw people were still looking for a chance to attack the Catholic stronghold again, encouraged by news of American victories over Spain. The whaleships’ guns and ammunition raised tensions further, and the Catholic mission house at Aleniang in Kitti was plundered and burned, forcing the missionaries to take refuge in the Spanish colony.
