German rule over Kosrae begins, lasting until 1914.
What happened
Kosrae was part of the Eastern Carolines handed to Germany at Pohnpei in October 1899. German rule there was light and indirect: officials claimed sovereignty with little presence on the island and relied on the long-established American Protestant missionaries to keep order and run education.
