Fr. Daniel’s Yapese catechism, the first book in Yapese, is published.

What happened

The catechism was written by Fr. Daniel Arbácegui, superior of the Spanish Capuchin mission on Yap for some 20 years. By 1899 the mission had baptized more than 1,000 Yapese and had 542 pupils in its schools, with five main stations on Yap.
