About 35 traders work in Chuuk, selling guns, dynamite and liquor.
What happened
Foreign traders had lived in Chuuk since about 1880, and some were killed in the village warfare that went on there until the end of the century. Their business in guns, dynamite and liquor, which Hezel says made local warfare far more dangerous, continued until the new German administration curtailed it.
Why it matters
Germany disarmed Chuuk in 1903, and the end of constant inter-village warfare is counted among Germany’s lasting marks there.
