Typhoon kills 25–46 people; 113 more die later on Pingelap; Pohnpei damage about 4 million marks.

What happened

The typhoon struck from Kosrae to Pohnpei; the low atolls of Pingelap and Mokil were hit hardest. German reports count five dead on Kosrae, four on Pingelap and one on Mokil, and on Pohnpei officials reported fifteen Pohnpeians killed and about 300 injured, while the Catholic history gives about a dozen dead. Most houses on Pohnpei were destroyed, and 113 Pingelapese later died of hunger or illness.

Why it matters

The famine that followed led Pohnpeians to hand over many of their guns for food.
