Eight Catholic schools on Yap enroll 267 boys and 98 girls.

What happened

Without a government school system, German rule left education to the missions, subsidizing German-language teaching. On Yap Fr. Sixtus Walleser persuaded the chiefs of Kanif to recruit pupils and punish absences, which produced a thriving school of 35 to 40 children. Franciscan sisters taught the girls in the colony.
