Fr. Gebhard and Br. Eustachius leave Pohnpei to found the Lukunor mission; the Sokehs station closes.

What happened

Sokehs was left almost empty after its people were exiled, so the mission station there closed. Mortlockese who had settled on Pohnpei after the 1907 typhoon, many of them now Catholic, had long asked for a missionary for their home islands. Fr. Gebhard, the former Sokehs pastor, sailed on a Japanese schooner and built the Sacred Heart church on Lukunor.

Why it matters

It was the first Catholic church in the Chuuk area.
