The remaining Sokehs and Palikir people, 426 (Kolonial-Lexikon) or 460 (MicSem), are exiled via Yap to Palau.
What happened
The remaining Sokehs people (men, women and children), along with Palikir, were deported via Yap to Palau; Germany’s 1920 encyclopedia gives 426 exiles and MicSem gives 460. More than 100 men were made to work the phosphate mines on Angaur, and about 50 exiles died of disease and malnutrition. Germany declared Sokehs government land and leased it to Pohnpeians from other chiefdoms and to settlers from other islands.
Why it matters
The exiles could return only under Japanese rule, the German archive says “as strangers in their own homeland,” and resettlement shaped who lives in Sokehs today.
