The local naval commander reportedly authorizes “I.J.O. Ponape” overprinted stamps, withdrawn after Tokyo’s Communications Department objects.
What happened
The overprints were typed onto Japanese stamps. According to the exhibit, the communications ministry in Tokyo had them withdrawn once it learned of them, and later souvenir items with the overprint were tolerated locally but never approved.
