FSM History

The Japanese administration gives Kapingamarangi people land in Kolonia, which becomes Porakiet.

What happened

Kapingamarangi’s people are Polynesian; by local tradition they descend from Ellice Islands castaways. Under Japanese rule, Kapinga men were taken to Pohnpei to work on road gangs and plantations, and the land in Kolonia was granted to house them. The settlement, Porakiet, became the community’s main point of contact with other islanders.
