First island census, with Japan’s national census: 52,222 people, about 48,500 islanders and 3,403 Japanese.
What happened
The count was taken on the same day as Japan’s first national census and processed in Tokyo. It recorded about 48,500 islanders, 92.8 percent of the population, and 3,403 Japanese, 6.5 percent.
Why it matters
Within about 15 years Japanese settlers would outnumber islanders across the mandate.
