Japanese authorities build the concrete Japanese Elementary School for Ponapean Children.
What happened
The two reinforced-concrete buildings were the only school on Pohnpei for Pohnpeian children; Japanese children attended a separate, segregated school. Both buildings were badly damaged by wartime bombing. One was demolished and the other restored as part of the island’s hospital, and the site was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
