Artist-ethnographer Hijikata Hisakatsu and carpenter Sugiura Sasuke arrive on Satawal.

What happened

Hijikata and Sugiura worked on Satawal as copra brokers for the Yap branch of the South Sea Trading Company, running its store. Sugiura married a Satawal woman, and at the chief’s request the two taught Japanese to residents and children. Under Japanese rule the government and the trading company had taken large areas of Satawal’s windward side for copra.
