FSM History

Government public-school attendance becomes compulsory for Kosraean children.

What happened

Kosrae’s public school taught a three-year course stressing Japanese, with two more years for advanced pupils. Elsewhere most church schools closed once government school became compulsory, but on Kosrae they kept going, teaching children too young for public school and graduates who wanted to read and write their own language.
