Construction of Truk’s naval base begins.

What happened

The mandate had banned fortifications, but after Japan left the League of Nations, building a base in Chuuk Lagoon sped up. The lagoon’s size and protected waters later earned it the nickname “Japan’s Pearl Harbor.”

Why it matters

The base made Chuuk a central target of the US war in the Pacific.
