FSM History

Okinawans on Ponape reach 1,145, about 30% of Japanese residents, mainly in fishing and farming.

What happened

Okinawans came to Pohnpei from 1924 and were mostly fishermen and farmers. Across the mandate, Okinawan fishermen in the 1930s married Micronesian women more often than other settlers did.
