The central and eastern Carolines hold 14,066 Japanese, Okinawan and Korean civilians plus about 8,000 troops.
What happened
Civilians were sent home first, while soldiers stayed until 1946 to repair damage. Almost every Japanese settler was repatriated; only 33 Japanese and Korean settlers in the central and eastern Carolines were allowed to stay with their families. Most children of Japanese–Micronesian families stayed with their mothers.
Why it matters
Many Micronesians of mixed Japanese descent later took leading roles in FSM public and business life.
