Interior Secretary Udall’s Order 2882 created the bicameral Congress of Micronesia, giving Truk five House seats, Ponape four and Yap two.
What happened
The Congress replaced the advisory Council of Micronesia. It had a Senate of 12 members, two from each district, and a House of 21 seats apportioned by population: five for Truk, four each for the Marshalls and Ponape, three each for the Marianas and Palau, and two for Yap. It could pass laws that did not conflict with US treaties or orders.
Why it matters
Jensen calls it “a major step toward independence.”
