FSM History

Yap State Constitution, drafted by a 1982 convention and adopted by majority vote, is promulgated.

What happened

Yap’s constitution creates two councils of chiefs, the Council of Pilung for the Yap Islands and the Council of Tamol for the outer islands. The councils can review and veto bills that affect custom and tradition, and the preamble calls traditional heritage and villages “the foundation of our society and economy.”
