Bailey Olter (Pohnpei) takes office as vice president; Tun gives his farewell address on 26 May.
What happened
Bailey Olter, born on Mwoakilloa in Pohnpei State, became the second vice president. The outgoing vice president, Petrus Tun of Yap, had chaired the commission that ran the June 1983 Compact plebiscite, and he went on to become Yap’s governor in 1987.
Why it matters
Olter was elected the third FSM president in 1991.
