Special election chooses 29 delegates to the Truk State Constitutional Convention, which opens 25 July.

What happened

Truk was the only state still governed under its old district charter, after voters rejected a draft constitution in 1986. The election had been postponed from December 1987, and when the convention opened, delegates chose Tadashi Wainit as president by 16 votes to 12.

Why it matters

This convention produced the 1989 constitution that renamed Truk as Chuuk.
