Pohnpei hosts the Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union assembly; Speaker Jack Fritz becomes APPU president.
What happened
Pohnpei hosted the union’s 25th General Assembly, and Fritz was to lead the group until its next assembly in Japan in 1991. In 1984 Japan’s Prime Minister Nakasone had suggested that Micronesian governments use the union as a channel to his office.
