UN Security Council Resolution 683 ends the FSM trusteeship; unscr.com gives 14–1, the newsletter 13–1.
What happened
The Security Council found that the trusteeship’s aims had been “fully attained” for the FSM, the Marshall Islands and the Northern Marianas, and ended it for them; Palau was left out. The government newsletter reported the vote as 13 to 1, while unscr.com records 14 to 1, with Cuba voting against. President Haglelgam said that “in the eyes of the whole world we are sovereign.”
Why it matters
Ending the trusteeship cleared the way for the FSM to join the United Nations in 1991.
