FSM History

Zika virus outbreak on Yap, the first documented in Oceania.

What happened

Doctors first suspected dengue, but tests found Zika, a virus that until then had caused only 14 documented human cases. Researchers estimated that about 73% of Yap residents aged three and older were infected; no one needed hospital care and no deaths were reported.

Why it matters

It was the first Zika outbreak found anywhere outside Africa and Asia.
