Manny Mori of Chuuk sworn in as seventh president, defeating Urusemal; Alik Alik becomes VP.

What happened

Mori, born on Fefan in 1948, had led the FSM Development Bank for 16 years before entering Congress through a 2004 special election for Chuuk’s at-large seat. Alik Alik of Kosrae became vice president.

Why it matters

Mori was re-elected in 2011 and, with Nakayama, is one of only two presidents to serve two full terms.
