The 4th Constitutional Convention opens in Palikir; it recesses in March 2020 because of COVID.

What happened

Before stopping for COVID-19, delegates drafted 67 proposals on topics including direct presidential elections, revenue sharing, reserved seats for women, land and a right to a clean environment. The convention did not meet again until June 2022.

Why it matters

Its work led to the 2023 referendum in which all nine amendments on the ballot passed.
