Suva Agreement brings the FSM and other Micronesian states back into the Pacific Islands Forum.
What happened
Fiji’s prime minister and the leaders of Samoa and the Cook Islands brokered the deal. It set up rotation of the Secretary-General post among the three subregions, a Micronesian Secretary-General from 2024, a new Micronesian office and a separate Ocean Commissioner. Kiribati stayed out until February 2023, and the FSM was given a permanent secretariat for the Micronesian Presidents’ Summit.
