FSM History

The whaling bark Australian takes on wood and water; about ten men desert.

What happened

The Sydney whaling bark Australian, under Edward Cattlin, stayed three weeks trading for yams and taro while several other British whalers lay in port. Hezel counts about ten deserters from this ship (the MicSem list says “several”), and by 1835 there were probably almost as many white residents on Kosrae as the thirty reported on Pohnpei.
