A pastor reports two of Pohnpei’s five chiefdoms now trade directly with ships, bypassing beachcomber middlemen.
What happened
The American Board mission worked to break the resident whites’ hold on trade and taught Pohnpeians to deal with ships themselves. Hezel says the white middleman disappeared completely only around 1870, by which time many remaining whites had gone to work for trading companies.
