George Johnston recruits 604 islanders from Namonuito for the Marianas.
What happened
George H. Johnston was a businessman who brought Carolinians to the northern Marianas to work on farms and a cattle ranch on Tinian; in 1866 alone he moved nearly 1,000. After a typhoon in September 1868, more than 400 of the Namonuito recruits were moved from Saipan to Tamuning on Guam.
