Posadillo arrests American missionary Edward Doane and deports him to Manila.

What happened

Within a month of the Spanish landing, Edward Doane, the only American Protestant missionary then on Pohnpei, was arrested in a dispute over his claim to land beside the colony, land that Pohnpeian chiefs had reportedly given to the mission. Charged with sedition and sent to Manila for trial, he was back on Pohnpei by late 1889, leading Protestant services in Kitti.

Why it matters

His arrest angered Pohnpei’s Protestants and drew the Catholic and Protestant missions into the conflicts of the Spanish years.
