The Queen Regent, María Cristina, told the Spanish parliament that “scenes of grief and acts of rebellion” had occurred and that preparations were under way “to make our flag respected on the island of Ponapé.” The speech appeared in the official Gaceta and was reprinted in provincial bulletins such as that of the Balearic Islands.
