Governor Posadillo and others are killed trying to reach the hulk offshore.

What happened

After two days of talks, partly held by the Capuchins, came to nothing, the remaining Spanish tried to withdraw to the old hulk María de Molina in the harbor, and Posadillo, the navy surgeon Enrique Cardona and others were killed on the beach. The survivors, Capuchins included, sheltered on the hulk for months. The Navy biography and Cabello date the deaths to the night of 3–4 July, while Moya gives dawn on 5 July.

Why it matters

It was the first of three Pohnpeian wars against Spanish rule, in 1887, 1890 and 1898.
