The first Catholic boys’ school opens in the colony, and work starts on a small chapel.
What happened
The Capuchins opened the school while rebuilding on the edge of the ruined colony; classes, often with only three or four boarders, taught Spanish, catechism and a little arithmetic and geography. The chapel, six yards by four, was built from materials saved from the ruins, because the new governor, Luis Cadarso, would not provide supplies.
