Spanish warship Quirós visits Chuuk to end inter-island fighting and warn Japanese traders against selling guns.

What happened

Spain kept no documented post in Chuuk, which was formally part of the Eastern Carolines governed from Pohnpei. By the 1890s traders, including Japanese firms, were selling liquor, explosives and guns in Chuuk, which the Spanish tried in vain to stop, while village warfare continued until the end of the century.
