What happened

Fr. José Tirapu reported the baptism of Awak’s principal chief, Chaulik, which may have opened the way to more conversions but deepened Catholic–Protestant tension in U. The Soulik was later acquitted of murdering a Protestant leader, and that acquittal helped spark the 1898 attacks on Awak.
